What IS The ANTHROPOCENE?
The name "Anthropocene" in Greek means "Age of Humans." The term was popularized by Paul Crutzen, a Nobel Prize-winning atmospheric chemist who thought that we should categorize the age we are living in as a new geologic epoch, in recognition of the fact that the primary force shaping the planet is now humanity. This newsletter, The Weekly Anthropocene, is a weekly roundup of selected news stories highlighting the interactions between humanity and the rest of life on Earth.
As a planet-spanning civilization, we are now responsible for the state of the world. We have the power to greatly destabilize Earth's climate and drive its wildlife to extinction-or build a new equilibrium where humanity can thrive alongside the rest of the biosphere.
